Lion!
“Well roared, Lion” is the line from A Midsummer Night’s Dream that gave the company its name, and its energy, since 2007.
The idea
The joy of playing
Since 2007 gutgebrüllt has given children and young people the chance to learn and experience the art of acting. We run term courses in autumn and spring, and every summer the gutgebrüllt ensemble performs to the highest standard, under the motto: “Children and young people make great theatre”.
The association exists to offer children an alternative to screens: one that challenges them to take part, that excites them and supports their personal development. Building a project together strengthens team spirit, teaches how to handle conflict and builds social and emotional competence.
The whole thing stands or falls on countless volunteering parents and committed colleagues who, behind the scenes and with modest means but enormous effort, make the impossible possible.
How it started
A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, 2007
It all began with William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in 2007. Parents started the project at a Viennese school, so that 45 primary school children could perform the play in German and English, directed by Elke Schwab.
In the audience that evening was Karlheinz Hackl, so taken with the performance that he invited the ensemble to open the Theater zum Himmel the following year.
The name came quickly. “Well roared, Lion” is a line from the Dream, and the lion’s strength has carried the team ever since.
The venues
Where we play
gutgebrüllt has never had a house of its own. We played in the garden of the Theater zum Himmel, from 2013 on a converted showman’s wagon, and today wherever there is room for a stage and an audience: in parks, on squares and on meadows in Vienna and Lower Austria. What stays is the evening under open sky.
Papageno Award
Awards
The Papageno Award is the highest distinction for youth theatre with young protagonists in the German-speaking world. From many entries across Austria, Germany, Switzerland and South Tyrol, around 50 productions are nominated, from which the Golden Bird and the Golden Papageno are chosen.
