The Alpine King and the Misanthrope is Raimund’s most comic and perhaps his most complete work, and one of the so-called Besserungsstücke, plays whose central characters undergo a moral change for the better. With his “magical farces”, drawing on fairy-tale worlds and fantastical figures, Raimund could criticise the conditions of his day without having his plays censored.

Maria Köstlinger directed for gutgebrüllt for the fourth time: “With its world of spirits and fairy tales, this play works beautifully for children and young people. The material is timeless, and we all do well to hold up a mirror to ourselves now and then.”
