For the summer of 2022 the gutgebrüllt ensemble staged the theatre version of Louis Sachar’s celebrated novel Holes. Directed by Niklas Doddo and Werner Sobotka, eleven young people between eleven and nineteen played more than twenty-five parts in a specially adapted, fast and funny version of this story about friendship and civil courage. Fifteen-year-old Stanley Yelnats has been dogged by bad luck all his life. Now he is wrongly convicted of theft and sent to Camp Green Lake in Texas, where in the searing heat young offenders have to dig holes, one every day. Supposedly to build character. Before long Stanley works out that the digging is about something else entirely.
Sachar’s multi-award-winning novel, a wry adventure about friendship and civil courage, justice and self-determination, in which a family curse from the distant past keeps catching up with its young hero, has been a fixture on school reading lists for more than twenty years and was filmed by Disney with Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight.
