Tales from the Vienna Woods

Tales from the Vienna Woods is the best-known play by the Austro-Hungarian writer Ödön von Horváth (1901–1938). It premiered in Berlin in 1931 and has been filmed several times. The title refers to the waltz of the same name by Johann Strauss the Younger.

Horváth wrote the play at the end of the 1920s; unemployment in the wake of the Great Depression is one of its central themes. It is regarded as a key work of modern drama. Hungarian, Croatian, German and Czech by background, Horváth strips away the cliché of Viennese cosiness and delivers a bitter, tragicomic satire of the society around him.
