The most famous line in Gogol’s comic classic is also the comedy’s central piece of misinformation. A small community far from the capital, forgotten by the rest of the world, is sinking into a mire of corruption, idleness and incompetence. When the unwelcome news reaches the provincial backwater, the worthies of the town are thrown into a frenzy.
